Supercritical water reactors are used to create bio-oil from plant-based feedstocks. Biosolids (85% water / 15% solids) are an ideal feedstock since they are derived from biogenic material, collected in central locations (i.e., wastewater treatment plants), are produced continuously and at large scale.
Bio-oil created from sewage sludge contains 40% – 60% carbon by weight. With suitable treatment to prevent polymerization, it can be pumped underground, thereby permanently sequestering carbon at scale.
The necessary inputs for this process are: ・Sewage sludge, organic waste, and biosolids ・Green electricity
